Am I in the right place?
If you’re a parent who is also a human being, then, yes, you are!
Human/Mother is a publication that explores what it means to be human while also being a parent.
Five years ago, I became a mother, and, after that life-changing shift in identity, the issues I had buried deep down within began to re-surface—loudly. I could no longer ignore my pain. I had to face it head-on, and so, I started that long and complicated journey through therapy and radical self-love.
Last year, I started this publication as a way of holding myself accountable to the work and the page. Since I was a young girl, writing was my way of learning about myself and processing the world around me. Over the years, I’d forgotten its power—its gift. I’m reclaiming it here, and I hope that you will, too. This space is also an invitation to be more kind and compassionate towards yourself, a person who struggles with their own mental health while also caring for another human being.
Welcome in! You are not alone.
At Human/Mother, you can expect the following in your inbox (or in the app):
the Crown Jewel (a thoughtfully-crafted personal essay that weaves memoir and personal commentary about various mental health and parenting topics) (1x/month)
the Mind-Body-Soul series (a more casual-in-tone post that shares what I’m feeding my mind, body, and soul and offers an opportunity for our community to share the same) (1x/month)
the Human/Parents series (a written interview series of various Substack authors who are also parents and are also dealing with one of the rotating monthly topics of Human/Mother) (2-4x/month)
the Therapist Spotlight series (a guest post from a Substack therapist that shares their wisdom and resources about a specific topic related to mental health and/or parenting) (1x/month)
Here’s what readers of Human/Mother have to say:
"I am so glad I found you this morning. Somehow, via catching up on Andy Borowitz…I was introduced to Tina Hedin who shared you. I found my way back to subscribe to both of you. I love your writing. I read about now and then went back to your trip to NYC and MoMA. So wonderful, insightful, moving. Thank you. Write on! And all good wishes to you and yours."
“This is such a moving essay, beautifully written and meaningful on so many levels. Thank you for sharing it.”
“Beautiful and painful. Grief is sneaky and complicated and I love what you said about managing it in motherhood. Thanks for sharing your story. ❤️”
